I am very new at this home recording thing and have very little idea where to start. I know that I want something basic but not entirely lackluster in quality. As of right now the only things I have are instruments. A fender start, an acoustic-electric, a 125 wt line 6 amp and a set of borderline run of the mill electric drums. Basically, what I am looking to do is lay down some tracks to pass around to other musicians and hopefully start a band.

I am confused about what I need in terms of "equipment". There is so much info out there and it's very tough to make sense of it all, especailly if you are on a budget. My budget is around 1500. I want to be able to record the instruments I have but really don't know how to get the best bang for my buck. I also know that I want to use an 8-track. heres my questions--help is really appreciated!!

-I need a good sounding recorder that will not be hard to figure out
-I want to be able to get good crisp vocals from a mic but don't really know which would be best
-I want to be able to record my acoustic electric and get the best quality
-I want to record my line 6 amp direct so i can use the effects that are in the amp
-and i want to record the drums but don't know how many mics ill need and where to place them

Basically, alot of my questions are associated with the purchasing of mics and placement of them. I really don't know which mics are best for any oneparticular job. I also don't know if using a pre-amp or getting some speakers would be a justifiable expense.

Thanks for the help guys, I really need it.

Well, I can help with a couple of things.
If you're planning on going computer route, try this place... http://www.visionmusicstudios.com/Recording_videos.html

now I don't use a computer so when I watched his vid on setting up for computer recording, I found it helpful.

I'm a bit confused tho, if you've got electric drums, why are you needing mics for them??

Anyway, check out tweakheadz...http://www.tweakheadz.com/ and read thru what he's got. He covers everything you're asking. A lot of reading but worth it so you don't spend your money on something you'll outgrow in 6 months.

Hope it helps.

Peace man.........

I agree, check out the tweakheadz website. There is a lot of good basic info about gear (what it is and what it does) and you can get a good idea of the average prices also. Do a little reasearch, read all you can find about recording. Spend $20 for a good book on home recording before you spend $2000 on gear you may not need. Download Audacity (free recording program that works fairly well and with almost any soundcard) and play with it. It's good software to learn the basic concepts of computer recording and will only cost you a few minutes to download it.

Assuming you have a decent computer, I would suggest this:

Presonus Firepod http://www.adkproaudio.com/viewitem.cfm?id=2778
3 Shure 57's http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Shure-SM57-InstrumentVocal-Mic?sku=270102
1 Shure Beat 52 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Shure-Beta-52A-Kick-Drum-Mic?sku=270267
Reaper Software www.reaper.fm

You should be able to make some pretty nice recordings with that gear.
