Monitor Levels; Can't Hear

Hullo,

I plugged my passive bass into my mic preamp and that into my computer line in. The record and playback levels are out of whack, though. When the levels are correct for recording I can't hear anything through my headphones. In order to hear myself play while I'm recording, I have to turn the volume up really really loud. When I play it back, it plays normally at normal volume. I don't have any problems hearing myself when I use a mic. Incidentally, my audio out goes to my home stereo receiver, which goes to my headphones. What can I do?

bass to audiobuddy to computer... software is cool edit pro. all sliders on windows volume control are at the top.
mmmm Are you plugging your headphones into your stereo to monitor the sound ?
Does it appear to be low just straight out of the stereo without headphones ?
Did you check the advanced properties within the volume settings on the digimax to activate all monitors and see if anything is turned down ?

er, it must be just really poor low frequency response on the headphones. it is definitely audible with just the speakers. it is still noticeably louder upon playback, however.
