If you have a volume problema with your JVC MD-4, check the plug/cable first.
Or, buy a headphone pre-amp that has volume control; between the two you should get enough to pop your ears.
Or consult with JVC on-line and E-mail them the problem and, MAYBE, THEY WILL COME UP WITH AN ANSWER.
Or, make sure you have the cue turned off and are listening to the takes to be mixed on the mix-buss/circuit.
Or, you do NOT HAVE YOUR PAN knobs turned left and right and not know it.
