Help with microphone and recording

So, I bought a Sennheiser e835 microphone along with a 48 volt phantom power mxl to usb adapter so that I could connect it to the computer. The microphone wasn't expensive ($99). I was wondering what should I do from here. Do I get a firewire or a sound card? I don't think my microphone is ready to record. Also, what recording software should I use, Cubase? Do I need the actual recording software to know if the microphone is working properly? I don't want to buy something that I won't need like the firewire. I'm so confused. Sorry if my questions may be confusing. Thanks a lot. :)

Download a free program like Kristal or Reaper or Audacity and you should be set to go. The usb adapter is you interface which should provide power to your mic.

Just one hint. The Sennheiser e835 is a dynamic mic, not a condenser. It doesn't require phantom power, just anything with a mic preamp and a low impedence XLR input. Phantom power is for condenser mics, with very few specialized exceptions.-Richie
