effects using cool edit, or hardware effects?

which is better, using effects in cool edit, or using an external processor, like the one included in the Mixer? thanks.

If you are recording to your pc, and then going to mix in the software, and the effects are decent, use them. If you record an effect, you can't remove it, so you'll have to retrack if you don't like the effect. So it's better to record as dry as possible unless the effect is needed to be recorded (e.g wah pedal).

Did I answer your question?

Hardware effects are potentially better quality than plugs but the good ones are alot more expensive in themselves and also require a more costly setup to patch them into your recording chain.

If money was no object I'd use mostly outboard stuff but as it is, the plugs I can afford outperform, or are at least equal to the equivalent hardware units.

In other words why spend $150 on a low end lexicon when I can download a bunch of free plugs which will probably sound just as good or better? On the other hand I doubt there're any freeware or cheap software plugs that would match something like a PCM81 soundwise.

I've never used CE but if the plugs are anything like those bundled with Cubase then you should be able to improve on most of them with just freeware. I don't know what mixer you have but generally effects included in mixers aren't anything special. If you check some free stuff out you can compare them and decide for yourself anyhow.

Of course the other bonus of using external stuff is that it eases the load on your CPU.

thanks for the replies, the problem i'm having is that my crappy mixer make hisses when i'm recording, and that mixer has effects built in that i normaly use. I know for a fact that it's the mixer and not my sound card or my mic because i've swap out all the other components except the mixer. Now i'm just going to grab a cheaper mixer without effect built in (so it'll be cheap, i'll look up some mixer model and show you guys if it's good enough). And i don't worry about my CPU load :) i'll have a P4 OC to 4ghz, and 1GB of PC4000 RAM, it shouldn't be a problem. thanks again.
