Connecting Microphone

Hello everyone,
I have been reading the board some time now and have a question of my own , Hopefully someone can help me with .

I have a Behringer DX 1200 Mixer and bought a new Mic, [Nothing expensive] but it came with a XLR plug [which connects to the bottom of the mic] and a 1/4 plug.
I connected the 1/4 plug to the jack on my mixer to the Line In , the mic works , but the sound is really low.

I also have a XLR connection called "Mic In".
My question is , do I have to use only the "Mic In" connection for the mic level to increase ..?
I was also thinking to get a cable with XLR jacks on both end might solve this problem

Am I thinking correctly in this situation..
Thanks In Advance.

Yes, mics have lower-level signals. You need to use the mixer's trim pot to increase the gain so that it's comparable with line level signals.

Better to use a cable with XLR connectors on both ends. You probably won't be able to raise the trim pot enough to make up for the pad on the line input. Even if you could, you'd be adding unnecessary noise to the signal from the mic.

Get the right cable, and you'll be happy.
