For the beginners of home recording: What are your biggest struggles?

What are the biggest struggles for you in terms of achieving the sound you want?

Is there something in your music missing that you wish you had?
 
Probably not knowing the questions to ask. I can listen to what I've recorded and tell you it doesn't sound "right", but I have a hard time articulating what the difference is between what I'm producing and a more professional sounding recording. My stuff generally sounds clean, but it just doesn't sound the same and it's hard to know where to go to figure out why.
