Beginners Errors

Right I'm just looking for some tips, and warnings of pitfalls for starting up some home recording. We are gonna be using a couple of mics, into a comp. using cakewalk. My my main concern is using effects and how the mic will pick them up, and how should I mic up a kit with limited number of mics, i.e. what is essential...?
Also, regarding the software, how does one configure the MIDI inputs (why can't i see my mic as attached or get any recording from it?)
Any general tips would be appreciated

3.5mm jack direct into soundcard

this whole setup is gonna be very basic....I just wanna make it sound as good as possible...
 
You're gonna have to be more specific on what you want to hear. BTW, you don't record audio onto MIDI tracks. Its impossible.
