Wierd instrumental song

Dude, that's like a Spinal Tap freeform jazz odyssey! :D

Pretty interesting. Not my thing, but I didn't want to stop listening. Sounds pretty good. The bass is a little loud or boomy. Maybe cut it back a little in the lows. Just messing around with it I pulled a little out around 125-250hz in the WMP and it cleaned up nicely on my setup. I think the drum samples are little busy too in some spots. A little too much filling and funking for my tastes, but no big deal. Overall it sounds good though. Nice creation. :)

Fecking cool dude...are you gonna want to play this at FeastJam? :D

This is one wild ride....reminds me of some of the stuff Shrapnel Records used to put out.

I liked it

I like it over all just found it a little boomy

I just dropped the bass a little and found it nice to listen to

but liked the sorta free flowing sound it had

I enjoyed the track thanks for sharing it with us

Thanks Greg. I'm noticing that too about the bass. I never can pick up on that in my place. One of these days I'll treat that damn room.

And concerning the busy drums....hell I was starting to put a ridiculous fill in at like every other bar. I can get carried away with DFHS. Let's just say I was going for a Virgil Donati vibe. :D

I know tunes like these are not for everybody. I've been listening to more and more out there fusion recently and I like to get wierd with stuff sometimes.

Very Mr.Bunglesque. weird changing time signatures, groovy, rocking in parts. I dig it!

I'm hooked. I like the drums because it's nothing I would have thought of myself...different is good here.

I love the dreamy guitar melody/lead line. echo-y, verbed up,

mix is good. I actually like the bass here, sounds good on my system as well as the cans.

dude, you nailed mr. bungle to the wall here. are you roommates with Patton?

Thanks alot elcholo, I really appreciate the comments.
Honestly, I never thought about Bungle while I was doing this - maybe I should have and I would have had some better ideas :D.

no, because if you'd have thought of Bungle while writing this, you'd have ended up with some calliope, thrash metal speed guitars, midgets, clown porn, murder, wah-funk driven Morris Day and the Time style rhythm guitar, somewhere mention about an egg, weird mexican polka thingy...

since college, Mr. Bungle has been the number 1 cause of my nightmares, followed 2nd by my fear of my kids dying.

HAHA...that sounds like a good idea for a collaboration track!
Best thing since the political death metal polka ballad. What the hell happened to that anyway? Anybody?

Very interesting piece. Cool jammy parts with grooves. I'd like to have heard a melodic theme emerge, but I found it compelling from a rhythm section perspective. The lead line's echoiness is interesting and spacy, although this echoiness did detract from the melody line at times.

Others have spoke of a "boominess" to the bass. I didn't see it that way, perhaps its my bass bias. I wanted to know how you got the bass tone. It has depth while also having of definition, articulation and present, yet without any harshness or dynamics problems. It sounds natural yet too refined to be raw. Maybe you just have impeccable playing technique? What I'm doing these days causes the bass to be too "smoothed over" so to speak and would like to improve it.

What mixing techniques did you use for this instrument?

Thanks Daren.

The bass sound is my Ibanez SRX-500 bass which has active electronics, played with a pick, and recorded DI through a Brent Averil 312a mic pre.
In the mix, I compressed it just a bit with the PSP vintage warmer, which also added a little grit to the sound. I also added a bit of high end eq around 4k and I cut a bit around 200 (perhaps not enough :p)

It is probably the fact that you are playing with a pick that is giving it the characteristic that I'm hearing. For some reason, that notion didn't come to mind because I virtually never play with a pick. I can hear it when I listen now.

Thanks for the tips. I'll experiment with the EQ settings. Adding frequencies in the 4K area have allowed fret-rattle and other noises to creep in. Maybe I should give my string action some consideration, or find a happy medium in there somewhere.

Thanks again, Daren

I should also mention that the guitar has a pot that adjusts between the bridge and neck pickup rather than a switch, and I had it slightly dialed towards the neck pickup because I like the extra thick, but slightly dark, sound it gets. It also seems to accentuate the pick noise a little less. (I suck at finger playing). I'm adding the high end EQ to sort of make up for that.
And I've adjusted the action on that bass pretty meticulously to keep the buzz at bay :D.

I should also mention that the guitar has a pot that adjusts between the bridge and neck pickup rather than a switch, ...

Seems your bass has a similar setup as mine. I'm running a Peavey Cirrus 5 which also has active electronics and the same pickup "blend" feature you speak of. (It's a damn fine instrument I must say)

I simply need to experiment more. I tire quickly trying to chase a tone. Ya know what I mean? Between the instrument, DIs, pre-amps, amp-models, mixing, and so on. So many variables, which is why I'm inclined to ask, "so how'd you do that?". In the effort to find a sound I want, I forget what I'm looking for and get detracted from my original goal of writing music.

I'll keep at it. No substitute for experience.

Very melodic mh28 - super nice playing and tone.
The drums are well done - the "busy-ness" puts it in a certain upbeat mood. They could be simpler but then the songs would "slow down" and become something completely. I think overall it's just a matter of personal preference.

:):D:):D
