SLuiCe - I'm trying to work out the vocal bugs before I do our thing.. I'm pretty confused because the vocal sounds so loud to me on this, that it doesn't sound good to me.. If someone else put this up, I think I would be saying lower the vocals.. I added more high end to the vocal on the remix, and it sounds pretty harsh to me.. Very frustrating indeed.. I notice that to get away with having the vocal this loud, you have to have a better overall vocal sound like yours. I may give up on this for now.. I don't know what to do with it anymore.. I agree with what you said about the vocals sounding seperate.. DAMN!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!

Ya, like i said, it's not a volume issue. What i believe is happening is the effects are taking up too much space. i think that unless you have a great mic and a great pre you might have to cut those effects back a bit. They're creating a sort of hue around your voice, a barrier that's keeping your voice from connecting with the soundscape of the instruments. You have a very synthetic (albeit terrific) instrument sound so it's probably very difficult to get a human voice to sit just right as it is. It's a real challenge indeed.

But please don't get too frustrated. I'm only saying it because i think that's your next step. It's outstanding already. Not long ago i was pulling my hair out trying to figure what all this midrange was that you were hearing in my tracks! Surely you remember. Eventually things click and the solutions present themselves if you're looking for them. Your average listener isn't going to know the difference, but might prefer one over the other without knowing why.

Does that make any sense?

hi sam

listening and typing :)

yeah... i remember this

the beginning is pretty cool... neat... dialing in a long wave radio :)

when the beginning kicks in (drums /vocals)..there seems to be a little bit much midrange on my monitors..
i just got done mixing my tune .. so im not sure if thats the reason?

your guitar noises are great in there... very creative!
i think the changes follow very well... seamless

reminded my of steve vai stuff.. for sure.. esp. passion and warefare? where the kid is in class :) with the kids in there

enjoyed ..thanks!

Hi there, Sam.

I really liked the production. Loved the violin-like sample. What is it?

I have some folks here at the office who say it's really cool, too (even in my office's crappy speakers)

Saludos, amigo!

Interesting stuff .... who are your influences?

I like the production and you work the synths in well. But, I agree with an earlier post that the synth at the beginning sounds too MIDI-ish for my tastes [edit] - yet the more I listen to this tune, the more it fits - go figure.

The harmonies are tight .... very tight. I don't suppose you used a harmonizer on some of them?

I'd like to hear the drums a bit hotter - but that's just personal taste. Are they real or loops?

Overall, very professional sounding. Anything but boring.

Finally got to check out the new mix.

Sounds pretty damn good. A bit bass-heavy on my JBL's, and a bit bass-light on my Altecs. That means the bass is probably about right!:D

Tbought I heard a bit of distortion in there on the R a couple times. Maybe the mp3? Coulda been my 30 year-old tweeters.

Vocal is out front where it should be.;)

Sam,
A great tune.
The sound is very smooth and balanced. I don't think the vocs are too loud or up front by any stretch.
This tune flows wonderfully and your bag o sounds gets a workout. :D
This is very inspiring. Each tune of yours I hear gives me ideas to try!

i liked this the first time around as well. i don't have the original to compare with but nice job.

only one nit, the bass drum sounds a hare too low in frequency but that's really a matter of taste. i like that snare drum.

Hey, I know this tune! I'd forgotten I'd listened to it before! It's nice coming back to a familiar song. This one sounds better - the vocals sit better. More laughing kids - that laugh at the end makes me laugh too.

I listen to your stuff and a thought crosses my mind for the first time - how do you get that sound? I couldn't get that great, big crunchy guitar sound if I tried to get it. I'm curious. What's the signal chain? Real guitar amp? Loads of compression as well?

Anyway, glad I heard this one again. Good piece of work. Nice to hear it sounding better too.

Sam,

You are one gifted individual! Very well crafted and produced. Oh, did I mention the playing was outstanding - not just the chops man, but more for the feeling behind each note. ( guitar, vocals drums...............) Many emotions were aroused with this song, which is in my opinion, is what music is all about.
The ONLY thing that troubles me, is the synth patch and the non-descriptive feeling that eminates from it. The timbre is neither pleasant nor grating but considering the lyrics and the message of the song, this might be EXACTLY what you are trying to evoke from your audience @ the intro, as you clear it all up at 0:46 with the extremely descriptive lyric and perfect power passion.
If I were playing the synth part on this one I would play it with two hands: the right one on the keys playing the part and the left one on the WAVEFORM knob ever so slowly morphing a sine-wave culminating with the meanest, ugliest sawtooth I could muster @ 2:09. It also should have the same dynamic depth as your guitar parts, not just in phrasing dynamic, but nuances on every note.
I love the panning, especially on the kids. With phones on, at the end of the tune I keep looking over my right shoulder wanting to say, " My names not El'ridge!"

Very, very nice job Sam.

thanks again for the ears!!

forgot to mention that this tune was recorded in 16 bit.. I usually use 24.. Another experiment was I used a de-esser on the guitar melody @ 2:25.. It enabled me to put it loud in the mix without being harsh.. I'm not sure where I read to try this, but I know it was in the clinic.. I think the biggest change was in the lyrics.. It was changed from "incurable" to, "it's a curable illness."

muzeman - I didn't add any more synth, just more guitar swimming in effects.. the samples of the kids were added because the song sounded waaay too serious.. :D thanks Pete!

Pedullist - thanks for coming back to check the remix!!

Cranky One - yeah, the deeper voice was mixed too low the first time.. I'm still not happy with this one, but it's time to work on some new stuff.. thank for always commenting Crank! I'm thinking of a tune for our next collab.. Let me know if you come up with any ideas..

JMarcomb - I agree.. One of the many things I did wrong was push the limiter harder than normal, and I think that helped make the already existing mid-range problem worse.. I'll probably remix it again after some new stuff.. thanks Jeff..

M.Brane - yeah man, took out the drip and the cough.. I realized I already used the drip intro on another tune.. on the new version I had a terrible cough that sounded just like 'Sweet Leaf,' but I changed it to the humm, or whatever that is.. :D Agreed about the guitar, and there could be some crackling because I pushed the limiter much harder than normal.. probably too hard.. thanks for checking again Brane!

sheppard - thanks for the comments shep..

sjcrts - thanks man! If you knew how much time I spent on it.. :D

Meshuggah - thanks Mesh!

SLuiCe - mail in about an hour!

flapo1 - here'a a complete gear list.. there's a link for the Roland and Alesis synth.. the main synth was the Roland.. thanks for checking it out..

bpoco - too many influences to name.. most people are surprised when they look through my Cd collection because there is always something they like no matter how extreme or mellow.. The vocals are mainly like three part harmonies.. no harmonizer.. I'm using a Digitech Vocal 300 and the harmonizer on it is only good for special effects.. It does have it's uses, but not in this tune.. I played drum pads hooked up to a Roland TD-8.. There is a link in flapo1's reply.. thanks for the comments!

jcmm - I will send word shortly..

erichenryus - agree about the bass drum.. I lowered the tuning on the TD-8! :D thanks for checking it e.h.!

dobro - here's some signal chain for this tune.. I usually do something different for almost every one..

Fender Mexi-strat with a Seymour Duncan hot rail pickup and tuned to drop B-flat.. Not dropped D, dropped B-flat. :D The strings are 12's..

2 tracks of this chain ----> guitar - boss pedals - Pod Pro - Blue Max compressor - into the recorder.. I add more compression after and e.q.'d..

another track of guitar that went ---->guitar- boss pedals- Sansamp Tri A.c. - Blue Max - recorder etc.. more compression e.q...

synth bass... nuff said..

a synth for extra meat..

another higher synth..

another added for texture..

and then the string sounds etc.. 6 tracks for vocals (3 different voices)

most of the lower end synth stuff went through the Blue Max compressor, and some of the quiet solos were a J- Station.. thanks for checking it out.. I'll p.m. you shortly about that other thing..

flat-9 - thanks for that detailed response man.. The intro synth gave birth to the whole song.. I started with that and made it up as I was recording from there.. I spent longer mixing this thing than I did on playing the parts, and it's still screwed up.. I need to take a break from this but I was definitely hearing your ideas.. Almost gave me an idea for a new song.. :D The samples were from a sound effects Cd.. I would never have been able to capture that sound myself.. thanks flat!!

That wasn't a mic'd cab used in recording your guitar? Crap, sounds like a cranked 1/2 stack to me. I thought you might be using a boogie or something, no offense to boogie owners :P .

Listening to the 4/5 version...

Wow, spacy...

One little thing I notice is that the backup vox have a little "overblown" thing going on with F sounds; like you were close to an unfiltered mic. There was a big one in the intro...

What a cool concept. Such power when the rest of the instruments come in. Deep and mournful. Very cool, desparate, pleading solo work, and tons of rich texture in the arrangement.

Spooky, talent-laden stuff man!
Well done!

Cheers,
Phil

b sabbath - wow

I never would've found my way into something like that on my own in another five years - I had no idea there were that many synths!

Thanks very much for taking the trouble to describe the signal chain - a real eye-opener for me.

listening to the old one and this one back to back....( i have the "riche's to rag's (13) version too!)......this one is much more powerfull!!!! has UMPH!!!!!!!!!! Love the kid's at the end, but i really dig the drip's in the intro on (13) as opposed to this intro.

Other than that?????? i got nuttin!

Thank's Sam!!!!

Peace

Rick............BUMP.........you can let it die now, i just had to check in!!!!!!!:D
