What's that synth thing in the start of Van Halens 'why can't this be love?' is it a bass through an autowah or is it even a bass?

I've always wondered that too. I always thought it was a palm-muted bass line heavily processed with stuff.

I was wondering whether it's low enough to be a bass.....it seems a bit mid-rangy to me.

Probably an arpeggiator on a synthesizer-just play a chord on it and it sequences through the notes of the chord-either playing them up or downward or both.
