My first song with Cubase! comments?

Up til recently, I was using Cakewalk 3 on my old P-166, sync'd to my Roland VS-840. I recently installed a new soundcard (Echo Mia) and couldn't resist trying to install Cubase 5.1 VST on the old machine, and it worked!

This song was done two years ago on the 840, but I copied all the tracks into Cubase via the digital cable, and changed it around, added some instruments, etc. The organ fills are the Native Instruments B-4 organ, a VST unstrument which is just so neat! Pad is my old Juno 106, vocals done through a Rode NT-1.

Any comments greatly appreciated!

PS, the chorused guitar is an Epiphone Casino I borrowed from a music store for 1 day.

I know I always bitch about canned cymbals but I just cringe when I hear 'em. That aside, very cool tune! The mix sounds good to me. Great harmony. That clean lead is spot on. Nice space in the mix too. Great job

cymbals and stuff

Thanks for the comments!

Forgot to mention, percussion and bass, horns etc. are from my Roland SC-88 module. I'm looking forward to using VST percussion like Battery and LM-4, as I find them much more realistic. Gotta wait for a faster computer though!

Good tune-for some reason I picture a movie soundtrack when i hear it-some guy walking through the city or something-dont ask me why hehe- I have to agree with mr. rat about the cymbals though-you almost dread the next hit-maybe they shouldnt be on every beat and it would sound more like a real drummer playing. Other than that I like it.. Strat

Good tune!

Did you mean to type VST unstrument?! :D That's a hilarious typo! I love VSTi's!

I agree that the mix is nice and spacious. I like the way the vocals sit into the mix and the dynamics around the chorus. I can't really think of any constructives that haven't already been mentioned.

You'll love the LM-4 when you get a chance to use it. It does offer a pretty good sound and options to control individual drums in the mix.

Take care,
Chris

cymbals

hmmm... wheels are turning. I have Battery and LM-4, and my computer can probably handly just the cymbal... Maybe I'll remix the midi tracks to audio, substituting the LM-4 cymbal for the sc-88 one - yah, I'll do it! A song is never finished...

nice rhy section. The cymbals, I agree need to be programmed more musically and then they should do much better...and bring the volume down too. I like the music, but unfortunately find the the vocals to be my least favorite, though sung well it appears. I like the horns sounds too...placed well in the mix....infact all levels are nice to me, with the exception of the aforementioned cymbals. Now of course, if Track Rat wouldn't have brought that up, and we didn't read any previous posts...you might have slipped by with a couple of responses letting them slide......but NOooooo.....!! ha!..... even though Mr track rodent is right...:p

Very smooth track.. everything seems to have it's place. Very professional mixing and pre-mastering... two thumbs up! I don't listen to much of this kinda stuff, but I can tell when someone has talent :) Can I ask what your musical influences for this track are?

- Dexium.

Wow, thanks!

Influences... I'm trying to think what I was influenced by when I wrote this... maybe George Michael or something.

One of my problems I think, is that I'll do a song like this, then the next one is maybe 80's synth-pop style, then it's an 8 minute progressive rock thing. I can't stick with one style, want to try everything!

I'm workin on that better-cymbal-mix. Should be done tomorrow.

Really appreciate the feedback!
