Mix my song?

The Way It Moves
I was wondering if its possible that anyone could mix this song for me. I did a pretty rough mix myself and I want to compare it to some other people. I apologize about the drums, I only had an overhead and a kickdrum mic. Let me know if anyone could help me out with it... thanks :]

Here is a link to the files (RAR file):

old files:

new files (seperate overhead and kick tracks):

thats pretty good!!! better than mine. i'm still new to the whole mixing thing really, but have been recording for a while. i forgot to make the overhead and the kickdrum a seperate track, so i might re-upload a new RAR tomorrow with the drum track split up.

i'm also buying a firepod soon so i might redo a few things with the song. we will see... as far as the volume of the files go -- does that matter at all?

It might be helpful if told us the reason, why some instruments are split to several files. Is it intended for different effects or panning? Or is it just the way it was recorded?

That would be a good idea indeed.

Don't change it. If it will do anything to the tracks, than it is a decrease in quality.

I am going to be reuploading the new RAR file here in a couple hours. I would love it if you guys would give it another shot. It will have the drums seperated into the overhead and the kick.

I am going to invest in a Presonus Firepod here in the next week or so, so we might redo a lot of the tracks. The timing is off at points, anyways.

Thanks a lot guys! Will update this again soon!

Here is a "not so loud" mix with a kick drum. That one crash cymbal is really wreaking havoc. If the timing was better I'd take the time to fix it (and the snare). When you re-track, I'd love a shot at mixing this. Do all the tracks in mono. I have an ftp server that you can upload wav files too. Maybe make a mix contest out of it??!??!?!????

I don't have any way of opening the RAR files...

Maybe use NL5's server? Anyhow, Gunnar, great job as usual!

When I get that Firepod, I'll be retracking the drums, miking the snare, the kick, a the toms, and a couple overheads.

Hopefully it'll be better.... I'll be uploading that in the next couple weeks. Thanks a lot for the help so far guys!

I think your mix is awesome NL5. For as long as I've been part of this forum, you've always had good mixes, and good masters. You always bring it up to a good volume while still maintaining a good mix. I'm not sure how you do it -- but its great. And I don't really have much to complain about. One thing I wanted to do was add a chorus and a stereo expander effect to the solo to bring it out, but other than that -- perfect.

What about my recordings? Is everything okay? Any comments?

Here goes my try (still not knowing, why some instruments are divided into separate tracks).
Mastered with liberal dynamics (-14 dBFS RMS sine): http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=9553
Mastered quite a bit hotter (-8 dBFS RMS sine): http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=9554
No timing corrections done, only mixing and mastering.

It's pretty much said already. It's a waste of space recording stereo, when it come from a mono source. Also, the timing is not perfect, as you also know already. A drum mic'ing technic which allows better stereo mixing would be advantageous, but also that, you seem aware of already.
Other than that, I think, they are fine, and a usable base to mix.
