Help me shape this raw Gem into a diamond

My guitarist friend did this on his own and he's going to turn me loose with it to try and really make it shine. I know i'ts a little muddy and the guitars are harsh but it's a pretty good tune and I'd really like to do it justice so...where should I start?

(Yeah, I know he's gonna have to re-track a couple of parts, esp the very end)

That'd be raw diamond into a gem.
"...it's a pretty good tune..." not a lot of melody in there at this stage.
All is mud and mids - this needs some sparkle at the top & some consolidation at the bottom.
If it's intended as an instrumental it'll need something more added.
If it's designed to carry a vocal then there's not much piint going further until you have that.
 
It's meant to be an instrumental. More melody, add some polish, hmm. I know the guitars are gonna need allot of work sound wise, this is all first/second take stuff ran direct into a line 6 pod. If we can lay some cleaner tracks and polish this thing I feel it could be a good piece. Thanks for the input!
 
The song is really good, not my cup of tea but very impressive composing. The drums seem a bit too quiet though.
