where to place compressor and eq in mixdown

i have a very simple question. i have recently just purchased a dual eq and i'm not sure where to use it in mixdown. should i run the mix through my compressor then to the eq then to the deck? or should it be eq, compressor, deck? or is this one of those cases where it is strictly one's preference?

thanks.
this site is a wealth of information.

You shouldn't need to run the whole mix through an external EQ.You will add noise and unless the over all recording was done poorly it is not advisable. Use the individual EQ's on each channel and "cut" rather than "boost" Frequencies. You could patch the external EQ into one or two channels if there are problems with particular instruments. Use the compressor on the mixdown but don't overdo it. Patch it in between the mixer and master deck, or use the main L/R inserts If your board has them.

Sincerely;
Dom Franco
