vocal levels on a stereo (no seperate tracks)

I'm not a pro, so take this with a grain of salt.

Listen to the suggestions you've had so far. The level of the backing track is too high. Also, you need to create a sonic "hole" in the middle, where the voice is. You can do this with EQ -- create a small valley in the vocal range frequencies for the backing track. It also might just be my old ears, but the EQ generally, both music and vocal, seems to be on the bright side.

Also, I just looked at the waveform in my DAW. What is it with everyone flattening dynamic range and pushing volume levels to 0 db? There are basically only two volume levels in the recording -- everything is either at -6 db or 0 db.

I may be wrong, but that's how it seems to me.
