i guess i'm saying i dont' believe in 'saturation' plugs.
what exactly do you want to do to your sound?
compress it?
distort it?
what are you planning on 'saturating' it with?
to me, when something is saturated, that means it's wet and soggy with it.
approximating the effect of magnetic tape, with a plug-in?
what's really happening there?

Some sort of witchcraft would be my guess.
I've never been a massive fan but when i've needed it the Massey Tapehead has worked really well, and the PSP Vintage Warmer has had it's moments.

Well the point is usually to tame transients and bring out certain harmonics. As tape would overload, it would somewhat compress the sound and the distortion would excite a certain order of harmonics. Hence, harmonic distortion.
But you know this. It definitely is a "sound", though.
The best saturation emulation I've found thus far that acts just like you would expect tape to act is in Harrison Mixbus. It really can change the sound drastically or supply a little tape compression depending on how you push it.
I use VOS's FerricTDS in Cubase but it doesn't have near the harmonic content of Mixbus although it does supply a nice smooth tape-compression that works nicely on drums. Using it across all your tracks or group busses can go a long way in taming micro-dynamics and producing a punchier, louder master, if that's your thing. It's pretty essential for loud rock, actually.
But it's just one tool among many. Use it wisely, my son.
