should your overdub vocals be at the same volume as your main vocals?

There is no right answer to that question. It totally depends on the style and sound you are going for. I typically have my harmony vocals softer than the lead vocal. If it's an exact double of the lead vocal, sometimes it's cool to have them at the same level and panned out of center. Other times, compress the second track and bring it up at about half the volume of the lead just to fill things out. There are lots of possibilities.
