mp3 conversion (positive effects)

By now we all know the garbage that mp3 conversion can add to a track... but I've experienced (a number of times) positive benefits of mp3 conversion...

A recent mixdown for the mp3 clinic showed that mp3 conversion actually helped the spectral balance of that mix. The wave file seemed to have too many lows... yet the mp3 showed much better balance.

Does anyone know about this? I've heard that some algorythms cut some bass frequencies... but I'm not sure why the conversion would actually "tighten" this mix up at the bottom, and make it measurably more balanced (and LOUDER, for some reason).

It's a known problem that digital has a tendency to pile up subsonics which can rob headroom. If you encode with a high-pass filter it could tighten things up by cutting out the garbage down there that your monitors more than likely can't reproduce. Even my 12" Altecs only go down to about 30hz. My 8" JBL's can only manage to about 80hz.
