Mixing Overdriven Vocals

Hey lads,

Quick question: do you have any special tricks to mix overdriven screaming vocals to enhance the singer’s technique?

Sometimes I feel the overdriven vocals just get lost in the mix.

No mixing will fix bad technique.
Move the microphone back 10 or 20 feet if they scream.

Why are they lost in the mix.
Boost the gain on the vocals during mixing and reduce gain on the rest.

Technique is ok I guess. Point is that I really want to enhance that raspy overdrive. Make it agressive. D’ya know?

actually,
with modern daws,
recording a very clean capture (even if he's screaming, mic techniques have to be spot on).
then, parallel process it with a gain/distortion plug (say, run his voice thru a marshall full stack!)

mix to suit.

Oh oh! With screaming vocals if it gets lost I highly recommend recording a double. Have one super distorted underneath the main. Also. JST Gain Reduction is my go to for screams. It does a fantastic job at compressing them.

If you really want to go the extra mile. When I record vocals I tend to have 1 main, center panned. Then 2 doubles, 1 left and 1 right panned. Really makes them THICC.
