Mixing Help!! - Limiter Boosting Vocals

Ok...
I was wondering if using the Limiter to boost the vocals to -6dB was a good idea or is it better to use the gain control on the compressor to get the vocals to the correct volume level?

Doesn't the gain push the vocals up to the limiter's threshold? So you get them loud enough with a combination of gain and limiter.

I'd be pulling the rest of the mix back before using a limiter on anything just for the sake of volume... If you need to go overboard to get one element to the "correct" level, then everything else is probably at the "incorrect" level.

Try to automate the volume of your vocals first before you overcompress / limit the track.
This way the compressor / limiter doesn't have to overwork itself.

Also note that you need to EQ for tracks to fit and sit into the song properly.
Some frequencies might bang up on each other causing vocals to drop in and out.
