i finally got a bass sound that just plain thumped.

it had the lows and the clarity and just the right compression. today i am the king. tomorrow i will return to being a chump.

1) conklin groove tools 5-string bass (even EQ settings, with pickup position slightly towards front pickup)

2) sansamp bass DI (bass/treble settings slightly higher than U, so the mids are cut a bit, with blend setting at 75%)

3) mackie 1604vlz pro (directly into the insert)

4) frontier design wavecenter/tango

5) sonar2 (with RMS + peak levels showing)

even with all of this care, I still had to play with the EQ/Compression in the mix.

this was my fx chain for the bass track. notice that i have 2 EQs. 1 before the compressor and 1 after:

6) waves REQ 2 (high pass at 60hz with 1.2Q)

7) waves C1 compressor (ratio[4:1], thresh[-12db], attack[6.03], release[300], makeup[+4db])

8) waves REQ 4 (cut[240hz, -6db, 2.0Q], boost[400hz, +3db, 3.0Q], boost[1.5khz, +3db, 3.0Q])

gawd...never knew how lucky i am to be using samples instead of real instruments. ugh... :) I never knew it was that hard to get a real bass sounding good in a mix.
