Compressing?

I go from a UB1002 into a Br-532 when recording. On the Br-532 should i use compressor, I've heard that this may help in the sound..Or should i use a different effect?

Rule of thumb would be; the more crunchy/distorted the guitar styles are already narrow dynamic range. Clean' might want some.
