Can i reduce distortion on spoken audio?

Hi, appreciate any advice please.

I conducted a telephone interview recently with a person overseas as I have many times before, however, on playback it's so distorted it's painful. Is there a way I can smooth it out please?

I'm using adobe audition 1.5, please find audio sample attached below

This looks like a pretty dismal situation.

You might have some luck with pop reduction plugins, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
