    Probably not exactly the right forum.... But long story short, it reduces the dynamic range by making loud things quieter (an expander on the other hand makes quiet things quieter).

    It keeps the loud stuff quieter so it doesnt wake the baby
    and it makes the soft stuff louder so you can hear it over the traffic noise from outside.

    Compressors can be used subtly (e.g. to smooth out a bass guitar), or with more strength (to make a vocal much more even dynamically across a song or to keep high, louder notes from distorting), to aggressive (used as a limiter to maximize the overall track).
