I'm getting close to finishing a project( or just need something else to fool around with)and was wondering if there is one single plugin that I could demo($99 range) that makes the rough sounding project sound like a CD or the fm stereo? Like a mastering plugin. I have tweaked effects eq compression etc. but the semi finished project still sounds live or raw...any help?

If the mix doesn't sound pretty much how you want it *in the mix* then work on that first. "Putting the cart before the horse" and all that stuff. Mastering isn't a plugin - It's a process. And 98% of that process is an EQ and a compressor (which you already have).

One bit of wisdom -- Better a "live" or "raw" sounding mix that sounds like you did it that way on purpose than an overly processed mix that sounds like you were trying to salvage or turn into something it's not.

What Massive said. Mastering should just be the finishing touch rather than repair. Get it more right in the mix before going into the mastering stage.

A nice entry level mastering plug in is the IK multimedia T-rax analog mastering plug in. Lots of presets to get you in the ballpark. I think this is free. I got the whole package many years ago.

    plug ins are just tools.

you probably already have enough tools to use, to basic mastering.

    the issue is,
if you do not know what you are doing,
wasting money on specialized 'tools' is not going to help.

that makes the rough sounding project sound like a CD or the fm stereo?
Its not the plugin, the thing that makes that happen is the human.
If the mix is rough, it will always be rough. You need to start with a good sounding mix, to get a good sounding master. You need to start with good recorded tracks to get a good sounding mix. It all starts from the beginning.

You can master, with any EQ, compressor and Limiter. Just pick your favorites and have a go at it.

The Waves Masters Bundle is excellent but it is going to cost you US$199. Well worth it though.

#1- get the free Youlean loudness meter (LUFS) and learn how to use it. It will show you your levels for the whole song and where or if you're clipping. A clipping track or mix will ruin everything. #2- Izotope is giving away "Ozone 8 elements" (for free) untill Oct.2!! It's an automatic mastering program that can get you in the ball park as far as eq, compressing and boosting the levels. Also has a widener and you can make adjustments to what it does. You can also upload a song to Bandlab mastering service and download different "Auto" mastered versions for free and see how much trouble is in the mix. ms
