Local Radio Play for major radio.

I was wondering whats the best way to approach local major radios to get some music played on the radio?

Keep an ear out for competitions for unsigned artists, apart from that, (I don't work nor have much experience in the industry), do you have a manger acting on your behalf? (I'm presuming you are the artist) Perhaps hiring someone with contacts in the industry to handle your promotion etc would help.....Apart from that I'd say a whole lotta luck.....
