weird recording level problem

hi everyone I've been looking at this board for a few days but this is my first post.

I have a problem when recording my vocals. it's hard to explain ,the level is always very very hot even if every input knobs in the chain is almost set to minimum gain.

strange thing is that the meter on my pre-amp don't even move at all like if there was no audio passing through it but the level meter in Audition is always about to peak.

here is what I use:
M-Audio Luna mic -->M-Audio DMP3 preamp(gain knob all the way down/hilo switch set to low) -->Soundblaster audigy(temporary... Line in level almost to zero) -->Adobe Audition(recording a very hot almost peaking signal)

this is while my rapper is not "yelling" like this other girl singer I know that can rip your ears apart.
I got myself the TC Electronics C300 compressor to help but haven't used it yet

so where the fuck I went wrong??????
any help apreciated.
Peace.

sorry my pc or this page was buggin when I posted and I thought that after the post was added it would redirect me to the main page or somewhere
