programs running in the background

I was just wondering about those pesky programs that run in the background, like virus scans, norton stuff, etc. I know that by pressing ctrl+alt+del, I can get a list of ALL the programs that are currently running. But does anyone know which programs are essentially VITAL to leave running? Are there some programs I should never shut down under any circumstances?

I know each person's computer will vary, but there have to be a few constants that are on everyone's system.

There are a few basics that you should never shut down:
Explorer - Controls the desktop interface
Systray - Displays certain apps that are running in your Tray (lower right of screen)
For people with logitech mice, you'll also have em_exec which lets you do stuff like make your middle button double click.
Those are the ones that windows can't run without (excluding em_exec). Some hardware has certain applications that it requires... so if you unload everything and your sound card doesn't work you'll need to single out that app (read your manuals).
