Normal gargle/crackle?

When I am playing back my song in Sonar, and I patch an effect such as Waves RVerb, usually when I adjust some of the controls, I get a really distorted audio sound. IS this normal to have while adjusting effects?

are you leaving the DB's alone?
are the effects registered are are they demos?
if you're not peaking the meters and causing a ton of clipping .. then there should be no distortion.
if you get pops and stuff, you may wish to tweak the buffers in the options/audio menu
