hard drives and latency

Hi,

I am currently using a laptop to record some audio tracks using Cubase SX. I am having an issue that I belive is caused by my hard drive, but I am not completely sure.

When recording, I can turn on the metronome and play a short note exactly at the tempo the metronome is playing. In theory, when I play the clip back with the metronome on, they should be heard at the exact same time. This isn't the case. They are slightly off with the audio behind the metronome (beep, note.....beep,note....etc). Is this because I have a slow hard drive and it takes the computer a little while to write to the hard drive?

This is an issue when overdubbing parts, because it sounds like you are right on, but when you play the part back it is slightly delayed (and shoulds like crap).

If the hard drive is the cause of this, would purchasing an external firewire hard drive help? What rpm would be sufficient (I was thinking either 5400 or 7200)?

Thanks a ton for the help!
Paul
