They've also got warranty, software additons, tweaking, etc etc...

P.S. I'm not dissing their price, it's a great offering. I'm only saying, given the technical know how, you can acheive much of the same for much less.

edit: there was a typo.. motherboard has been added

Okay, let's say that you have $4,000 for a top of the line recording DAW. What would that buy you? Other than the best CreationStation?

Let's start with a NORCO DS-600S 4U (BLACK) RACK-MOUNTABLE CASE with a COOLER MASTER iGREEN 600W V2.2 ATX 12V UL & FCC POWER SUPPLY. That'll eat up $333 so we have $3667 left.

Next, let's slap in a ASUS STRIKER EXTREME nVIDIA nFORCE 680I SLI CHIPSET ATX FORM FACTOR motherboard. At $300+ this is the pricest motherboard that ASUS makes. It supports 6 internal SATA drives and 2 external (eSATA) drives. In this beast we'll pop a INTEL CORE 2 DUO E6600 (BX80557E6600) 2.4GHZ EM64T DUAL CORE W/4MB CACHE central processing unit and 2 GB of OCZ OCZ2P800R22GK 2GB KIT (1GB x 2) PC2-6400 800MHZ 4-4-4-16 240-PIN DDR2 DIMM RAM. That'll set us back a healthy $800 and leave us only $2,867 to work with.

As the motherboard supports six SATA drives internally and as the Norco case ALSO supports six SATA drives (in a hot swap array no less) let's get six cookin' WD 150GB RAPTOR WD1500ADFD 10000RPM 16MB SATA-150 3.5" HDD and set them up as a RAID-5 arrray. This will set us back another $1,544 leaving us with $1,323.

'Da money is getting tight!

We're going to need a optical drive, so let's get a couple of PIONEER DVR710B BLACK 16X DUAL DVD RW DOUBLE LAYER 5X RAM drives. That's another $80 and brings us to $1,243.

We're going to need a keyboard and mouse, and I've always wanted to get a ION ILLUMINATED KEYBOARD and mouse so I can have the lights turned down and still see what I'm doing. Only $60 for both and $1183 to go!

Let's not forget the OS while were at it... MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP PRO 64X for $134. We now have ONLY $1,049 for the video display and adapter!

I love big displays, and personally I think two is better than one, so... let's get TWO NEC 19" 1940WCXM-BK WIDESCREEN 1440X900 700:1 5MS VGA DVI monitors. These cost $265 a pop, or $530.26 for two, so we are now down to the wire with only $519.04 for our video adapter. My oh my, whatever shall we do?!?

I am a BIG believer in having the same manufacturer for both the mobo and the display adapter, so we are going back to the ASUS well for this component and now, for the very first time, we need to cut a corner. We just don't have enough for the current top of the line video adapter which costs $600 all by itself, so let's go with the second from the top ASUS EN8800GTS/HTDP/640M GEFORCE 8800GTS 640MB DDR3 PCI-Express w/2 DUAL-LINK DVI adapter for $410. Now we are almost there with $109 still left to spend.

I noticed that the CreationStation boasts a MultiCard reader so let's pop in a MWAVE CR-RW5201 52 IN 1 BLACK USB 2.0 INTERNAL MEMORY CARD READER & WRITER. This fits into the 3.5" drive slot and eats up a whomping $10. Down to $99!!

Let's wrap this up with a ZALMAN CNPS9500 LED-CU COPPER BASE CPU COOLER for $57.50.

We now have only $41.50 left, so let's go buy a nice lunch.

Now, other than lunch, how does this compare to the CreationStation? Well...

On the down side this box has only 2GB as opposed to the CreationStation with 3GB, BUT...

The memory it does have is HOT gaming performance RAM, the motherboard is a hot gaming board, it has a far faster processor, six 150 GB 10,000 RPM HDD (approximately 800 GB after you subtract the storage needed to support the RAID-5 config), the drives are all hot swappable, TWO 19" widescreen LCD displays, two DVD-RW drives, and a cool illuminated keyboard and mouse.

Now, you may point to the warranty, but of course EVERYTHING here is warranted by the respective manufacturer. You might also point out that the CreationStation is already put together and that you have no taste for climbing the learning curve to put this beast together. Fair enough. Hold the lunch.

You can have Multiwave put this DAW together, install the software, and make sure that everything works for $80. So you would have to chip in $40 over the cost of the CreationStation.

Big deal!!!

I do like the Mac Pro, no question. But as far as the price is concerned, well, dropping $5K on a PC enjoys a long and honorable history... it's just a whole lot tougher than it used to be. :D

Did your order come as one shipment?

One of the things I'm making room for, with my build, is future upgrades...

I can always throw 2 gb more ram in there (or swap out what will be there for 8 gb), a quad core processor, raid arrays, storage abound, etc.. All without changine the motherboard..

:D If only my current machine were built with future upgrades in mind.. RAMBUS is the devil...

Edit: Oh yeah!

Try changing the motherboard on a creation station or other oem built pc.. You'll love how Microsoft Windows XP greets you upon first boot... Retail XP makes it more expensive, so I'm finally free...

Last time I made the mstake of getting Windows OEM with my build... Yeah.. Not a very good way to spend $169...

nope, it came as like 4 separate shipments!

but all the packages showed up within like 2 days of each other so it was cool. it was my first time really building a computer from scratch, so i had fun. this thing blows away any store-bought computer i've ever seen. i love how it is up and running instantly, most store-bought comps take forever to get running because of all the shitty bundled software on em. :o
