All set up to record from Vinyl to CD - but no go!

Hello all.. I have set up everything correctly, I believe : line from Record player to line-in on sound card; earphones pick up the sound okay; I have a CD-RW which works fine from CD/CD; I have CoolEdit (limited issue); and a range of CD burning software. When I open CoolEdit and then begin the record player, I get no "wavy lines" - no nothing! I can hear it but the software seems not to!
If someone could tell me where to start looking, I'd be very grateful!!

Is there a meter of some type in cool edit, if so does it show any signal? Is there some configuration within cooledit for selecting the wav in device?

Double-click the speaker icon in the bottom left, by the time. Is the line in volume muted or down..
