I have an ASUS laptop with Intel i3 Core processor and 4GB RAM 3 USB ports no firewire

starting afresh except for computer and mic cabinet.

I need to be able to do live recording with up to 8 inputs mostly mics.

Suggestions for hardware and software.

Budget an trying to keep under $2,000.but not rigidly enforced :D

On the cheap end there's the Zoom R24 @ $500. On the pricey end there's the Zaxcom Nomad 8 @ approx. $5,500 and the Sound Devices 788T-SSD @ $6,650. In between these extremes I'm not aware of any field recorders with 8 inputs coming near $2K.

You're looking for "somewhat" portable, why not check out the Presonus Firestudio? PreSonus | FireStudio Project

It's got 8 inputs and I have been using them for years with great results. My drummer has a couple and they're small enough for him to put in his backpack and bring them to the studio and toss them back into his bag and take them home. I think they are around 500 bucks but you can find them cheaper.
