Adobe programs

would you install photoshop, dreamweaver, flash and fireworks on the same laptop as your DAW?

I heard that if those programs are not running, then it won't compete for RAM. Is this true?

will it compete for cpu power?

Basically it is true that if you instal the programs, but they are not running, then they will have no impact on CPU.

It is not always true, though, because sometimes, even when you haven't explicitly opened the programs, some may be operating in the background. For example, a program could be polling the internet for updates.

If you are using a reasonably current PC, these background tasks, even though they are using CPU, should have minimal effect effect on your DAW.

However, if you want to play safe, you can run MSCONFIG,see what's running, and disable any that are active.

Correct. You have nothing to lose.

You only need to worry about programs running in background if they interfere with your audio.

However, disabling them as a matter of course has the benefit of making start up quicker.

Personally? I wouldn't install most of those programs anyway! Not a fan of most of Adobe's library. :D

Ideally, you would have a dedicated DAW machine and wouldn't need any software outside of what you use for audio creation.

But Gecko's right, as long as they're not running, they shouldn't be competing for system resources.
Regardless of what software you've installed, it's a good idea to go through your Services and disable anything unnecessary and to stop any unneeded processes before you start recording.
