unbalance to balanced and balanced to unbalanced

I thought this topic deserves a thread in its own right.

Now I have various bits and pieces of unbalanced and balanced stuff and Im wondering about the best match between them, such as some type of converter.

Far as I can see so far consumer grade unbalance equipment is -10dbv and the professional balanced stuff is +4dbu. It appears like that to connect balance outputs to unbalanced inputs a pad is required so input is not overloaded, and to connect unbalanced output to balanced input a little bit of amplification might be needed. Is that so?

I did come across one converter device and it does state a signal to noise figure(greater than 90db) and it runs off a power supply, so it must have some kind of preamp in it. Then again I could use a better quality preamp like on my mixer for example? Adding more amplification I would assume effects signal?

What do you think? Do I need it to connect all this groovy analog gear to computer?
