Teac 80-8

I recently aquired a Teac 80-8 and was wondering about the dx8 noise reduction unit that came with it. Is it worth having? The little I have done with it was with out Noise reduction. I thought it sounded pretty dang good with out.
The reason I ask is , I think the dx8 is broken and I am about to send both units to Tascam for a tuneup. Should I save the $$ on repairing the dx8 and focus just on the deck or what? Thanks Dan Salini

The old workhorse!

I used an old Teac 80-8 in my home studio in Phoenix. Those were really well built machines. After many years of use (Without DBX)I got a new Tascam TSR-8 with the noise reduction built in.... Wow I had never really noticed all the hiss until I heard a recording without it!
The old 80-8 is a better built machine, and it's motors and gears are all heavy duty...built to last..
The newer machines are more plastic, and lighter weight aluminum. I'd suggest that you have the old recorder and noise reduction unit serviced, or just buy a new dbx or dolby "S" unit.

Happy Reeling
