Tascam 688 won't play or record

Hey Tascam 688 users,

Need some help with this;

My 688 won't play or record but FF and RW works fine.

To clarify; tape won't roll in play/rec mode BUT i can get it to play/rec with no cassette in tray and with my finger pulling up the two "sensors" in the top left corner of the cassette tray. As posted before in the forum this seems like a fairly common problem (machine not recognising tape). I have opened the machine up so i can pull up the sensors with a cassette in the tray, but it won't play while doing this, i have also put in a new belt so that is not the problem either. Any ideas? Bad motor?
 
Did you figure it out? I have the same problem: transport works with cassette FFW/RW, and the shuttle works in both directions, but Play just stops right away.
 
You must use a Type II, High Bias cassette. They have different cutouts on the top edge of the cassette than Type I.
But maybe you know that already.

Also a new belt can make a world of difference.
