Tascam 688 battery question

I have an old Tascam 688 which has been sitting unused for about 10yrs. I want to use it again to remix and transfer old tunes to my DAW. I don't seem to be able to select preset scenes. I have tried pressing CLEAR when switching on, but don't get any numbered scenes. I am going to change the memory battery, but wondered if the unit should still function in soma way without it? I don't seem to be getting audio through any outputs, but not sure if the battery is required for the machine to work at all. It does power up etc and deck functions as it should but No sound (apart from a 50Hz hum in headphones.

Hi,

I got a 688 last summer and it thankfully still has battery life but I did read that without the battery you won't be able to enter the scene that allows for mixdown etc. At least that's what I got out of it. It seems to make sense since it's a digital router, you wouldn't be able to correctly assign the outputs in order to get signal from the tape. You may be able to track but I don't even think that would work. If you don't end up having any luck feel free to send me a PM and I can help you out by transferring yr master cassettes to wav files w/ my machine.

Hi Level, thank you for your kind offer, and opinion on this. Just a small update, (which is not good news). Last night I fitted a new drive belt to the 688, which was a bit tedious, but only because I had not read instructions properly. Once I had removed a few extra screws it was actually simple. Anyhow, after putting it all back together, it will go into Play/Record on the tape deck, Stop/pause/ Fast forward. Fast rewind seems to have stopped working. I am sure it worked before I did this, so maybe I dislodged a contact or something? Not sure. I am going to get a battery today, which is a simple thing to change, to see if it brings its audio signals back to life. I think that you might be correct about it being needed to select inputs. I am not sure about the Rewind problem. Maybe it uses separate motors for these functions? One of the motors did have a bit of an odd looking appearance on the outside of it, like melted black "plastic" down one side of it, which may have been a wire . i did not examine that any further , as I was concentrating in getting the belt changed. I will let you know how this proceeds, as it may be useful to you in the future. There are some very good posts about how to disassemble the 688, which makes the task easy. I think they were on this forum, or perhaps on 'GearSlutz" forum. My 8 track tapes were also tied into Cubase Midi files, using an old Atari omputer( which I no longer have), so are probably not worth the hassle. I was just more curious to get this machine functional again, as it seems to have some value! Thanks again for reply.

Hi again Level Anything. I did not need a battery after all. i took it apart to check it. 3.05V. After a bit of experiment, I now have all my scenes back. Still no sound though, so I think I have a power supply problem. Faint crackle when tape is playing, with the 50Hz hum. i have found a local shop who specialise in retro tape decks, so I think I will bite the bullet and take it in. (they offer a free estimate for the work required). It might yet be fixable. I can only hope.!!

Hi again Level Anything. A bit of progress here ! After taking it all apart again, and checking motors etc., I did not find anything wrong. When I put it back together, the Rewind still did not work. THEN, after pushing at the button a few times, it started up. I noticed I had to press the button near the bottom left hand side to get it to operate, rather than just in the centre. I also think there might be a slight delay between pressing the button and it actually operating, which might suggest a capacitor or dry joint problem. At least it now works. Very happy. Thanks for everything.
