Hello all. Owner of a TASCAM 688. Had it for 263 years and counting. I wana run the 8 tracks to my computer to mess with the mix. The sliders on the 688 are a little crusty and crackle. I was told to get an interface between the 688and the computer but can any one get specific? I am no good at trying to figure out what I need when it comes to all the comp. stuff. Just something that will allow me to tweak the levels on the drums, bass, vox etc. I also dont need the Rolls Royce of the comp stuff...Thanks all for your help..

Try deoxit on the faders:

To import the tracks, you'd need a DAW... preferably with 8 tracks. If you don't import them all at once, you'll have a hard time (impossible?) matching them up. I've found that on my 488 the tape speed isn't consistent enough to do a couple tracks at a time and match them up afterwords. Anyways, here are some converters (for example):

or

http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Delta1010.html

That'll get expensive, particularly if you don't intend to use your computer for anything other than mixing. This tutorial might help?

Sure. No problem. Hope it works out for you. I've been dying to get all 8 tracks (from my 488 recordings) individually into cubase for a while, but can't find the time to get to my friend's to use his (very nice) computer recording set up. My setup is, well, very inadequate.

u don't need the faders. just use the tape out rca's 8x8 if that's possible with your setup. You'll have the sound coming straight from tape as opposed to through the faders and eq.

I know it's a dead thread

But did any one ever find a (pdf) manual you can down load and in english please I don't read German very well lol

German is the only one i can find and it's a scaned (pdf) so I can't translate it

Thanx Mugger_Mike

Update?

I started this thread last year at this time. I seem to get the itch in January. I was just wondering if there is updated material out there on running my 688 to my computer so I can tweak the mix.? Thnx....Lewis

Zander...you might want to try posting over in the digital forum since folks will be more actively discussing digital interfaces. As was stated above you need a multitracking program for the computer, and you need an "audio interface", a box or computer card that converts the analog audio coming off the 688 into digital audio that is then recorded to the hard drive in your computer.

BTW, if you do ever get any of the DeoxIT products for your 688, the "F5 FaderLube) is the one you want to use for faders and pots, not the "D5" which is for metal contacts, jacks, switches etc. I have both and with both I've got it covered.

688 to interface update.

Hey hairnomore,I'm just getting into my 688.I use a presonus fp10 interface and I've found it to be really good. The fp10 gives you 8 mic/line inputs so you can come out your inserts on the 688
into the fp10 line in and record endlessly track by track onto your software of choice, cubase sx is what I use.If you use ts jack out your inserts just push it in to the first click,if trs push it home. The 688 up front gives you a good warm start to tracking. But,I've got a question too,I wanna go out thru the 688 group out 1L/2R onto my mx 55 2 channel reel to reel, then to cubase, but i'm getting heaps of noise over the recording, betwee 688 and r2r anyone doing this with no noise?
cheeers.
