Tascam 688 = 238 = 688 ???

Anyone know for sure if...

The 238's heads are in fact the same as the 688's?

If I were to make a recording on my 688,
can it be played back in a 238?

Are both of these machines compatible?

If I was to make a recording with my 688...
would I still be able to separate the tracks in a 238?
and vice versa?

Yes. The 238, 488 and 688 transports are cross-compatible. Recordings made on one can be played back on the others.

Thanks for confirming!
Much appreciated!

I have a friend that is willing to trade his 238,
for one of my 564's.
The 238 is in excellent condition. Almost no use at all.
Feels like it just came from the factory, with original box, manual, and
remote.
I believe it's a very fair trade,...especially on my part,
because I have "3" 564's now, and don't NEED to have 3.
I have 3 because, I won one in an auction that I went after
only because there were 50 + brand new MD DATA discs...
and had to purchase it to get the discs, which was well worth $75!
That was well over $500.00 in MD DATA discs!
The reason why I have 2 of most pieces of gear that I own, is...
I leave one at the studio/practice spot for recording,
and one at home to mix the recordings when I get home instead of
constantly transporting the gear back and forth.

That is a VERY fair trade IMO.

Congrats!

Thanks brother!
I thought so too!

We'll be meetin' up again, tomorrow to make the trade...
I've already tested the 238, and it works flawlessly.
I've already let him "borrow" the 564,...and he loves it.
I'm probably gonna throw in a couple discs for him, seein' as he is a friend,
and I think I'm gettin' the better end of the deal.

I just wanted to confirm the 238 is indeed compatible with my 688,
before I made the trade. But then again,...it really is...a no brainer!:D
I've got a decent piece of analog history comin' to me in excellent/near mint condition, for a trade on somethin' I already have 3 of!

It's a shame that they don't produce these machines / recorders anymore!

hey corey,
are you sure, I thought the head layout was different. I always thought the 238 and the 488 were compatible, but not with the 688. Obviously, you tried?

All of the 8-track cassette heads are compatible, though may not be the same part numbers. The track spacing is the same. Might not be able to use a head from one machine in another because of mounting design, etc, but you can record a tape in one and play it another. Same goes for Tascam 4-track on cassette going back to the first portastudio, Model 144. The only issues you might have concern different noise reduction, like dbx vs Dolby S, depending on model. But the track widths, head gap and all that are standard.

:)
