TASCAM 488 OR 16 bit digital?

Here is a curious question. Well, maybe you will find it curious. How would you compare the sound quality of a TASCAM 488 Mk II to 16 bit computer-based digital (say, recorded via an Audiomedia III card onto an old Mac running 16 bit Pro Tools)?

I am sort of in a saving up phase for a good computer-based system, and it might take a bit before I can afford what I want. Meanwhile my old Mac is sitting there, fully loaded, but run out of disk space.

And the worst part is I am not having any fun.

And I don't like to wait, because I am a spoiled bitch.

So I can either get a new hard disk for my Mac or buy a Tascam for a coupla hundred on ebay. I am actually more inclined to buy the TASCAM because I think it might be more fun. I know the editing will be much easier on the mac, but I am wondering about sound quality-- 16 bit sucks, no doubt. Could it be that the sound would actually be better on the Tascam casette system????

Thanks for any input,
jk
