Stumbled across this thread, but interesting discussion re: dynamic range, plus the rant about the "loudenator" is precious. I had to cross post it here.

Also, an interesting note there about two different masters for vinyl and CD of a Petty album, with the vinyl master intentionally having a fuller dynamic range than the CD.
BTW, an interesting anectode in this weekend's paper, about vinyl as a sort of a push back from the record industry:
