REVISED: Problems with 1/4" inputs on Tascam 488 mkII

I accidentally typed 1/8" in a previous post. Here's the reel deal:

I've been messing around with my 488 for a couple weeks, using it not to record, but as a base for playing and writing music through my headphones since I am currently without an amp, but I noticed today that the first two 1/4" inputs' signals are significantly weaker and worse-sounding than the 3rd and 4th inputs'. I've been setting the trim on these tracks all the way up to get a distortion effect, so that could be the source of the problem. Has this ever happened to anyone? And how would you suggest I go about fixing it?

Thanks,
Adrian

i've been mainly using a guitar and mic for those first two tracks, with a keyboard occasionally, but the effect is the same regardless of source.

yeah, its a really cheap mic that actually uses an 1/8", but i use a converter to get it to 1/4". and the guitar is a similarly cheap squier telecaster.
