Otari MX 5050 what did it cost new?

Ok I just purchased the Otari MX 5050 2 track for 50 dollars. I am wondering how much that unit cost brand new. I know that these machines require a lot of maintenance but I’m not worried about it because I think it will be fun. Anyway what else do I need? Perhaps alignment tapes, demagnetizer, head cleaner, special tools.. Im not sure. Help is always appreciated

Denaturated chemically pure cleaning alcohol + Good quality qtips.

special tools..

Nah. Unless you wanna go full out and be able to even do head alignment, in which case you need an oscilloscope and a tone generator. Also, the mechanical adjustment may need some special tools, typically force-meters, which really just is a linear scale. I bought plastic ones that are ment for sports fishers to weight their catch.

Can anyone estimate how much this kind of thing used to cost brand new. Im always interested in seeing how the price of things falls over the years. For instance the first computer I ever had would be absolutely worthless today.

hop on over to ebay and see what they're going for. they're definitely WELL worth $50 (or three times that).
