Search for threads started by him. +1 for the vote of confidence on his work on the 424...reminiscent sonically of stuff I've heard Dave (A Reel Person) do on his 244/246 units, and he has a lot more horsepower at his disposal, but search for threads he has started as well. Ksounds and A Reel Person will likel redefine or at least broaden your opinoon about what you can do on a Tascam cassette 4-track.

I agree the OP should dump his current portastudio and get something with dbx onboard and more features. Well keeping the Porta02 for a notepad is ok too, which is what it was designed for. You can still use it for that purpose and use a 424 for better results. However I highly recommend stuff from the 80's or early 90's like the 244, 246, 644, etc. If you want to be pleasantly surprised at what 4 tracks on cassette can accomplish.

The Tascam website has a "Legacy" page with all the older/discontinued units.

The cassette Portastudios available new are down to the 02mkII and MFP01, until they're gone, then it's eBay all the way for this type of gear.

How'bout the likes of 8-tracks on cassette, as in 488mkII demo.
