I ran with a Fostex G16 from 1990 until 2013, when I moved to a 2" Otari MX80.
Finally sold the G16 a couple of years ago, along with a spare G16 I picked up mostly as a parts deck.

Have you had it since '91 and finally using it again...or did you acquire the deck recently...?
Does your deck have the option 8339 sync option installed? Is that how you're locking to the DAW...or are you running the deck free?
I loved how well mine worked with the sync option...it was flawless. Before my first DAW, I use to lock it to an early sequencer-only version of Cubase.
That deck was a cut above its competition because of the on-board synchronizer.
