45 Year Old Reel To Reel Tape - What Can I Expect?

We're currently in the process of testing an old Sony machine that was loaned to us to see if it is working properly. We've visually checked all the tapes and boxes for mold. We found none we could see. We're going to using new tape stock to check the operation of the machine as best we can.......FF....RW.....STOP.....PLAY....etc. Looking for any signs or issues that might lead to tape damage from the transport. As I previously mentioned......the old tape we're going to run is Scotch 144. At this point......we don't even know if the machine will work right.......since the person who lent it to us hasn't used it at least 10 years it seems. So........that's where we're at and we'll keep you updated. I'm not the one who will be doing the actual testing and running. My former band mate in CT has the tapes and it will be him at the wheel.
