How to get that one synth sound

So, I got me a midi controller, I got me some synth vi's. Now I need to figure out WTF all those knobs and buttons and saws and oscillators do and how to acheive "that sound." Does anyone have a good source for synth training or tutorials?

YouTube has some good tutorials including one from Moog. You might also find tutorials for your specific VSTIs there, too.

If you prefer a book, there's Refining Sound by Brian K. Shepard, which has a companion web site and uses a free soft synth for lessons, although you can apply the lessons to your favorite hard synths or soft synths.

Thanks for mentioning those, Garry-- I have both of them, but didn't think to mention them. How to Make a Noise is also available in print in various editions, each focusing on a particular type of synthesis, but I've got the free e-book.
