Ok, after 8 years it's finally time for me to reply. I don't think the DMP3 is much of an upgrade over most interface preamps. I used to have an Maudio firewire solo, and the DMP3 was an upgrade. Now I have a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, and the Saffire's pres are as good or better on most sources. So unless you have the bottom of the barrel interface, I'd skip the cheapest preamps and save up at least $500 for an RNP etc. Maybe when this thread was started the DMP3 was a significant upgrade, but I don't think so anymore. My vote (after 8 years of contemplating) is stick with the stock pres (unless you have the bottom of the barrel interface, in which case, save up for one of the many $500-$600 8 channel interfaces).

This thread popped up to the top again due to someone voting

Seeing this poll started in 2002, 16 years ago, there are a heap better entry level compressors around now. Maybe time for locking this thread and starting a new poll?

Yeah, this is an old one. There are actually a lot of better preamps in this day and age. The Daking Micpre One smokes this whole list and you can pick them up used for around $300.
    This is just a test
